Search Larimer County Traffic Court Records

Larimer County traffic court records cover citations filed in County Court, District Court, and three city municipal courts. To search Larimer County traffic court records, use the Colorado Judicial Branch docket lookup with case class T for state court cases, or use each city's payment portal for Fort Collins, Loveland, and Estes Park municipal tickets. The court traffic record is held by the court that handled the case. The Colorado driver record is a separate file held by the Colorado DMV. The two files do not always match, and access rules differ.

Which Courts Handle Traffic Cases in Larimer County

Three distinct court systems handle traffic citations in Larimer County. Knowing which court issued the ticket controls the search path and the payment portal.

  • Larimer County District Court (state, 8th JD) – traffic felonies (vehicular assault, vehicular homicide, felony DUI under CRS 42-4-1301); cases sit at the Justice Center.

Types of Traffic Cases on Record

Colorado classifies traffic violations under CRS 42-4-1701, which categorizes traffic offenses and infractions and sets penalty schedules. Three tiers run through the Larimer County system.

  • Traffic infraction – civil violation, no jail. Class A infractions carry DMV points; Class B do not. Most are handled by penalty assessment under CRS 42-4-1701 without a court appearance when paid within twenty days.
  • Traffic misdemeanor – criminal violation such as reckless driving, driving under restraint, or first-three DUI / DWAI. Can carry jail.
  • Traffic felony – vehicular assault, vehicular homicide, and fourth-or-later DUI / DWAI under CRS 42-4-1301 (class 4 felony, no lookback).

Searching by Citation Number vs by Name

State County Court traffic cases can be searched by citation number on the officer's ticket once the ticket has been filed with the court. The Colorado Judicial Branch docket form lets a user enter a case number or a party name. Municipal court systems usually require the citation number. Photo enforcement citations from Fort Collins or Loveland use a separate notice number printed on the mailed citation.

Paying or Contesting a Larimer County Traffic Ticket

The state penalty-assessment process lets a driver pay most traffic infractions without going to court if paid within twenty days. A "Not Guilty" response routes the case to County Court for an arraignment. Municipal tickets follow each city's payment-or-contest procedure.

  1. For a state court fine, use the Colorado Judicial Online Payment system; pay by case number.
  2. For mail payment, send a check or money order to the Combined Court at 201 LaPorte Avenue, Fort Collins, CO 80521.
  3. For in-person payment, visit the Larimer County Justice Center Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  4. To contest, mark "Not Guilty" on the penalty assessment and file with the court by the date on the citation.
  5. Attend the arraignment in County Court and request a trial date if pleading not guilty.
  6. For a Fort Collins ticket, pay at fcgov.com/municipalcourt/payment; early settlement within twenty days can reduce DMV points on some violations.

Public Access Laws for Traffic Court Records

Traffic court files in Larimer County are public unless sealed. The Colorado Open Records Act applies to county administrative records and is referenced by court staff for related transparency questions, but court files themselves run under Colorado Judicial Branch rules and Chief Justice Directive 05-01. Sealing is highly restricted: CRS 24-72-708 and the broader Part 7 sealing scheme do not permit sealing of misdemeanor traffic offenses, traffic infractions, or DUI / DWAI cases (misdemeanor or felony). A speeding-ticket conviction or DUI generally remains visible in the Larimer County court record.

Court Traffic Record vs Colorado Driver Record

The court traffic record and the Colorado driver record are different files held by different agencies. They serve different purposes and have different access rules. A court traffic record proves what happened in a specific case. A Colorado motor vehicle record (MVR) shows the driver's licensure history, points, suspensions, and accidents.

CDL and Commercial Driver Records

Colorado commercial driver license information is at dmv.colorado.gov/cdl-general-information. Under 49 CFR 384.226, states may not mask, defer judgment on, or divert a CDL holder's traffic conviction; the conviction must appear on the federal CDLIS record. CDL holders in Larimer County generally cannot use Colorado's deferred-judgment statute or a driver-improvement course to keep a moving violation off the commercial driver record. Plead carefully and consult counsel before agreeing to a deferred disposition if you hold a CDL.

DUI and DWAI Cases

CRS 42-4-1301 governs DUI, DUI per se, and DWAI. The first three offenses are misdemeanors. A fourth or later offense, with three prior qualifying convictions from separate criminal episodes at any time in the defendant's life, is a class 4 felony. Colorado does not apply a lookback period to felony DUI. Felony DUI is heard in District Court at the Justice Center. See the criminal records page for the full treatment of DUI cases, sealing limits, and CBI criminal history.

Deferred Adjudication and Driver Improvement

Deferred judgment under CRS 18-1.3-102 allows a court to continue a misdemeanor or traffic-offense plea for up to two years; on successful completion, the plea is withdrawn and the case is dismissed. Colorado also operates point-reduction or driver-improvement programs through the DMV under Title 42, Article 2. Fort Collins and Loveland municipal courts offer "early settlement" point reductions on minor moving violations paid within twenty days. The deferred-judgment and driver-improvement paths are limited for CDL holders under the federal anti-masking rule described above.

Sealing or Expunging Traffic Records

Colorado's sealing statutes carve out misdemeanor traffic offenses, traffic infractions, and DUI / DWAI cases (misdemeanor or felony). Those records are not eligible for sealing. A speeding-ticket conviction or DUI in Larimer County will remain visible in the court record. Juvenile traffic adjudications follow the juvenile expungement path under CRS 19-1-306 and Form JDF 301. For a complete summary of sealing eligibility, see the Colorado General Assembly's sealing and expunging memorandum.

Photo Enforcement in Larimer County

CRS 42-4-110.5 authorizes automated vehicle identification systems (red light and photo radar) statewide. Warning signage is required, notice must be served within ninety days, and no DMV points are assessed for citations issued by automated systems. Agencies may not boot vehicles or report non-payment to DMV for these citations. Fort Collins and Loveland both operate photo-enforcement programs; those citations are filed in municipal court, not in the state docket.
